David Daye's channel mainly featuring Irish uilleann pipe and some Scottish bagpipe information, helpful tips, and other information related to my 1997 "Penny-Chanter" invention which is a new way to build the melody pipe ("chanter") for the uilleann pipes using telescoped straight brass tubing creating a stepped tapered bore.

Lightly scrape the upper surface of the blades near each corner. First check thicknesses and avoid any that are paper-thin. Scrape the thicker corner(s) first.

One of the few recordings of my 50 years of Scottish piping. "Devil in the Kitchen" traditional no-copyright tune, c. 1994, midway through 15 years as a local Highland dance piper. Skill level is the US top amateur level at the time, the highest level where I won solo contest prizes.

Fix Sinking Back D

Uilleann pipe chanter reeds can develop a "sinking" or unsteady back D (thumb note) if scraped too thin. When pressure increases, the thumb note goes flat instead of remaining steady. Good stereo sound, use headphones or speakers. An average summer thunderstorm in northeastern Ohio, with regular lightning and thunder, modest winds. Our nervous Cairn terrier Lotta is heard at times. Shot with our new Canon SX170-is camera, the sound and picture unaltered except for a few seconds beginning and end. Sound briefly quieted when zooming; I didn't know this at the time.

Listening to this beautiful song, on March 30, 2024, exactly 22 years after the death of the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons.
Yes, so you probably know that a slightly altered version of this was played for her funeral procession, a perfect adaptation of the feel of this original with the conventions of the pace of modern military procession. I play pipes because of Scots neighbors many years ago from her times, and the Scottish music they shared with our family when I was a young child. my concern is how not to shave/scrap it too much. I guess this material removal is a non reversible process.

The photograph was taken at the Duke Of York barracks in Chelsea prior to the Regimental or Battalion sports day. My father was competing and I was there watching. It says 1950, but it was at least a year earlier before the Second Battalion departed for Malaya.
Thank you for this reply. I play the pipes since 1966, I became able to play all the tunes on this recording in my late teen years long ago, but never a player of any importance to the pipe world. Another UA-cam poster of tunes from this album says it was made in 1959 and I have no way to be sure, living so far from Scotland and from London.

It's a joy to listen to old bands with a flatter pitch playing classic tunes. A nice break from the modern, rapid fire fingering exercises and tone that is almost too perfect so as to sound a bit artificial, a bit soul-less and mechanical.
Just did my paki stock a few days ago, much much better, also gave a little more space for the bass reed to do it's thing. Thanks David!

Absolutely unique style he had. Very thought through combination of staccato and legato, open and closed fingerings, off-knee playing and all sorts of embellishments resulting in outstanding musicality. I wonder how did he come up with his way of playing, as there was definitely a lot in it that feels counter-intuitive, not what one's fingers usually play on their own.
